Building a team

You make a great point, and yes, we've lost some players because of playing time/position. In the end, I think you just have to "lay down the law," and risk losing a player. In our case, it was my son we moved, so that set an example to the other kids and parents that ANYBODY can and will be moved. Would I like to see my son in the I.F., sure, but I want him, and the team (and especially the parents), to realize that this is a TEAM game, and in this case, we are stronger with him in CF.

A key question (with our travel team), is that this type of ball is about winning, and we will place players in those positions that will help us achieve that. On the other hand, with 10/11 players, we want the flexibility to move players around, if needed. Thus our approach, is that infielders go thru outfield drills and vice-versa; and all may go thru pitchers' fielding drills. We end up with a primary and secondary player at every position, with most every kid having the opportunity to play some infield in scrimmages. For our team, our mission and "evolvement" is a little different, in that we are trying to develop positive attitudes, as well. Also, all our players play in house leagues, too, so the skills we work on carry over to their regular teams. Hope this helps. JT
