Little League - PONY League

I agree generally with Wayne and Jon. Little League uses 60 foot bases through age 12. Pony gradually increases the distance, so at ages 11-12 the bases are 70 feet apart. At age 13-14 PONY uses 80 foot bases.

In our area there is no PONY program past age 12, so the kids play Babe Ruth ball at ages 13-15. The 13-year-olds have to adjust to 90 foot bases. It is very hard for most 13-year-olds to make the transition to 90-foot bases from 70-foot bases; even harder from 60-foot bases.

IMHO, the best part of PONY is the gradual transition in field dimensions. This becomes more relevant as the kids get older. It probably has no relevance at ages 9 and 10.

Little League has its advantages too, and the most important question is where will your son get the best instruction in how to play the grand old game.

So the basic question is which local organization is more suitable for your family. That will vary from place to place and family to family. Hopefully, both organizations are well-run, dedicated to the kids, and you will be choosing between the better of two goods, rather than the opposite.
