Proper Rundown Assignments

One more point on rundowns that helps nail the runner quick.

Have the defensive player, who is awaiting the throw, do what is refered to as "close the gap". As the runner is approaching, the defensive player who is awaiting the throw should start moving toward the runner and close the gap. Proper execution of a rundown play involves timing, so rundowns are a play that needs to be practiced on periodically to keep the timing sharp. Remind your defensive player not to wait to long before he starts to close the gap and tell him to close it by taking short steps that are under control. It's an agressive move that allows the defense to set the tempo of the play instead of the runner.

I have mixed feelings about defensive players using a fake throw during a rundown. I've had coaches say NO!, don't fake a throw, because it can fake out your teammate. On the other hand, I've seen runners stop dead in their tracks on a fake throw.
