I'm surprised no one's addressed the New Bat Weights
By: Randy Dykstra
If you remember... I put some graphs and info from a study that did experiments on the SF Giants and I think ASU or Uof A (arizona) college teams plus a couple LLers... they also did a physics analysis with just the bat and ball.... the analysis showed that lighter was better but when experimentaion was done and the "HUMAN" element added, quite a different result came out... Actually, heavier bats up to about 40 oz produced the highest exist speeds.. Now the heavier bats didn't provide as much bat control so you need to balance both aspects.... The authors came up with their "Ideal" bat wieght and for most of the MLBs in was between 32 and 35 oz.... Now wasn't that a surprise?? Only over a 100 years of trial and error came up with the same answer..... I find it interesting that the NCAA now is finding simlar results.... Travel ball you see kids swinging the bigger bats and the ball going a lot further.... Of coarse they are the top kids but, I am convinced that a hitter should swing the heaviest bat that he can still control..... the trick is finding that exact value.
Question are the NCAA standards on the net somewhere? I haven't looked since they don't affect me for a while....
