What is cheerleading all about?

My daughter, who is almost 12, is in the process of joining a local cheerleading club that will apparently cheer for a local J2 football team.

My first reaction was somewhat negative as I was not comfortable with the "role" that cheerleaders play vis a vis adoration of the athletes... I would prefer that she compete athletically herself, however, I do recognize the community spirit of the endeavor.

I understand that there is also competitive cheerleading which can be quite intense... I am more comfortable with that as long as the cheerleading itself is viewed as a sport or dance form.

I would like to hear some opinions (pro and con) about cheerleading and possibly about the experience of cheerleaders or their parents after a few years of involvement.
