KEEP THE WEIGHT LIMITS AND LET THE KIDS LEARN AND HAVE FUN WHILE THEY PLAY FOOTBALL!

By: Bob Connell

I have been coaching youth football in New Jersey for Fifteen Years. I also had the pleasure of Coaching for four years at the High School level.

Our program (youth) has always ( Association began in 1952) had weight limits. The line is slightly higher than our backs. We have three age levels, 7 to 9, 10 & 11, and 12 to 14.

Our League has had to raise them periodically simpily because of the growth of players today. But the limits ( even though raised) stay in place.

They (limits) in no way hinder our High School players ability nor does it hinder the High School Coaches decision to post a player in the best possible position for him and for the betterment of the team.

There is always an argument for raising weight limits. But the truth of the matter is who does it really benifit? Certainly not the 115lb 12 year old halfback who may be unable to play against a 180lb 13 year old defensive linebacker.

Some of the "over weight " boys I've seen ahev always been able to make the weight limts ( and really need it anyway).

My opinion only.
