Riding the pine on the B-Team

This is a problem in pee wee Football accross the board. What I'm about to say may offend some coaches, its nothing personel. I have been in the pee wee coaching ring for 9 years. During my first 5 I saw this type of WIN WIN attitude from most of the head coachs I worked with. The subs got little playing time and I found myself always talking them out of quiting because they always showed for practice and then got little playing time. Once I became a head coach I said that will not happen. For the most part all my players get a lot of playing time during a game. Yes.. I'm guilty of sometimes not getting ONE player his share of the game. But the next game I have always made the wrong a right. This has cost me several games over the past 4 years but HEY they are young boys and Middle school and High School is the time for playing only starters, after all those coaches are paid to WIN ball games, we have volenterred to TEACH FOOTBALL not win games. As pee wee coaches our kids will not learn unless we put them in a game ... let them play ... make good and bad plays...go back to practice and teach some more. I have played against 4 teams this year that I know during my game 5 to 7 kids did not see one snap. THIS IS A TRAVISTY. I am spear heading a proposal to the league here that our kids are required to play a MIM of 8 plays. This might be a start to PeeWee coaches Teaching Football. At the start of every season I tell my players and parents...#1 We will learn Football, #2 We will HAVE FUN, and last #3 Lets play to WIN.
Yes Marty this Pee Wee game is for the kids. Its about Learning the game, TEAM work , sportsmanship and Commitment. If the young boys are not allowed their share of the game they become discouraged and any hidden tallent will and can never be seen. The so called B players need the time on the feild with the starters to put their practice to the test...see what they have learned. You may sacriface a win to bring a simle to 7 or 8 young boys. And believe me the loss they will get over (yes.. even the starters) not playing or very little playing time is what they always remember. So as Pee Wee coaches..lets Teach to play Football and play Football for Fun and winning will take care of itself.
