if you got a parent that DONT think their child should be star of the team, and we re lousy couches, THEN worry....i mean no disrespect...and the info Coach Reed puts in his books is valuable...but do how much of your "style" is his? and how much is yours? when i first started, i thought id take the place by storm, and have the greatest line ever.....yeah, right...i HAD to adjust to the type of league i was in, and the fact that these were 10yr olds...not the 20-30yr olds id just spent the last 12 yrs playing with and against.....i was lucky to be with a head coach that played in that league, had kids in that league, had brothers that coached in that league and was as patient with me, as he was with the kids, and i learned alot...i was with him for 2 yrs...and then he moved out of town and went to coach his sons in high school...i was lucky enough to get another head coach with the same experience...for the next 2 yrs...we won the title in 95....neither of us coached in 97 cuz of our jobs....we were suppose to come back together last year...i made it, he couldnt....so i got the head coach job by default...luckily they hooked me up with a good guy thats also the baseball coach...he has 2 good kids on the team...and he knows the kids we drafted...(one reason why we drafted them)....im telling you all of this to show you the importance of experience...s anxious as you are to get to the hs level (id love to too) take time to smell the roses and learn as much as you can now...and try to develop what works for YOU, not just what Coach Reed, or anyone else would do...i love talking to all you guys, and i hope to learn (and have learned) alot, that will hopefully, help me....but, when the wars begin i have to make sense out of all that knowledge and try to make it work for the kids...what THEY can do, or not do, is the question.....ive learned alot from the other coaches about everything....even losing 32-0 teaches you how much losing 32-0 really sucks......which makes you try even harder to never let it happen again..you dont want to lose, nor lose that badly, nor let that happen to those kids....all i care about are the very basic fundementals of the game...and putting those kids in a situation they, hopefully, can handle and build their self confidence to go their and give their best shot..i only DEMAND one thing from them, and thats giving me 110% effort EVERY play...win or lose.....the old addage about not if you win or lose, but how you play the game should be the banner and creed of ALL youth league sports, especially 5th and 6th graders in developmental programs like ours...cuz, the next level they go to arent gonna care so much about that, only if they can get the job done or not....
