Sheila-

What I did with mine was just tell him not to worry about being too big to play on a "young" league, and to NEVER give up and/or forget about it! I told him that his day would come when he got to high school and those football coaches got a look at him and when they saw his size and found out he was big AND athletic, they would be drooling and begging him to play for them! And guess what... that's what they did (without the drooling)! So, tell your big guy that!!! The day will soon come when the coaches can't get enough of him! He'll be the player that the coach is using as an example of "never giving up"! The one who wanted to do something so badly, that when the opportunity was finally there, he took full advantage of it. He'll be the one who is starting every game in high school after never having played at a younger age, while the smaller player who has been playing since he was 5 yrs old with kids that are the same size is sitting on the bench! You know why? Because in practice, the little guy is overly confident because he has been playing for 10 years and your son hasn't. But, your son is not only bigger, he wants to be out there on that field at gametime, so he's gonna give that coach everything he asks for! So, guess who wins the position? The big, strong guy with no experience, a lot of heart and enough will to never give up and grab the opportunity when it finally comes! It doesn't matter that he never played! In fact, it's may be an advantage to him! He won't get any false ideas about never having to be up against anyone bigger than him! I think that ruins players for high school!

Sorry about the long post, but as you probably know by now... this is a real sore spot with me!
