Starting a Coaching Staff for next season
By: JT
Gina, what we as parents, even "educated" ones think of our kids, and their situation, isnt always what others think, especially coaches...and the hardest thing to do as a coach, is be as objective as you can be about the kids, and the team...theres always kids who's parents think they are better than they are, or that they should play a certain position ahead of another....and they may actually be right...but, as a coach, you do what you can to put kids in situations that they will succeed, thats your job...if you have a player that is better at a position than another, or can do more things than the other, you try to put the one that is a little limited in a position that will benefit both him, and the team....i had a boy that played for me for three year, was fast and tough.....i needed a te, and he was a perfect fit, cuz he could block and catch...i even used him at center in a pinch....his dad didnt agree with where i had him, and was even less impressed with the fact our backfield was very talented...he understood it, but wanted his boy to play fb, and run the ball...and when i brought up the "for the good of the team" speech, he started laughing, and said "what about the good of the boy?" and so on, and so on....well, i wasnt happy, wanted to punch him, but, i managed to curb my italian temper, and talked politely to him, and walked away.....i did use him in the backfield some, and he did his usual fine job, and we even managed to get him a score...but, where i used him the most, and he helped us the most was te....we won the title, and after the championship game, his dad came up to me and thanked me for getting him some carrys, which is all he wanted, but that i was right to use him the way i did, and he understood..i just smiled, shook his hand, and walked away......this year, his little brother joined our team...his dad wanted him to play for us, he's a good athlete, so we drafted him, and his dad never said a word to us about where he played...ive seen it before on our team, with a former hc...he was polite, but finally told the parent, HE was the head coach, not the parent, and that HE would play the kids where he thought they fit best....and, of course, he was right... i have a few parents like that...alot come to practices...most are polite about it, some are not.....i try to be polite, i understand where they're coming from, but it DOES get frustrating....and i dont want to hurt the kid, or embarrass him, or get him in the middle of something...cuz, the kid is always the one that will say, whatever you need coach, sure.......and you cant ask for better than that..... (and, im glad i DONT have to deal with YOU!!! hahah)
