Unlimited Weight Youth Football - There is a way

Coaches,

I'm new on the board so much of this may have already been discussed
but this is what worked for us:

- To cover the safety part, we offer two divisions for players, weight/age
divisions for 7-14 year olds (65-lb, 75, 85, 95 and 120-lb) and an unlimited
weight division with a maximum age of 14 and with no 9th graders allowed.

The unlimited division only plays other unlimited teams.

Finding players - Our league has been around for 30 years and we were
SHOCKED at the number of 10-13 year olds that were out there who weighed
140-270-lbs. The Players & Parents told us they never came out
before because they knew they were to heavy for pound ball. In our first
season we had 5 teams with an average team size of 23 players. Next
year we are adding another team. We also found another program not
far from us to play at http://muyfootball.org/

As for the studs who are 200 plus pounds......it's rare. Most of our players
are kids who normally sat around a lot...a 10 yard sprint was a marathon
during the month of August. By November though, they had improved a lot.

For most of the players, this was their first attempt at organized sports. If
they had tried football for the first time during two-a-days with the local high
school (where they are rushed to place players in their positions and run off
those that are going to take some time to develop) they probably would
have dropped.

The benefit to our unlimited players was they had all season to play
against their peers; they were part of an organized program like their school
mates who are lighter; and the coaches could take time in showing them
the fundamentals.
