The Craziness that is football!

By: Dum Coach

You have a poor substition policy. You were ahead 22-6 in the 4th and couldn't figure out how to get your 6's in? And you blame it on the other team? And you can't figure out why you got citicisized?

Here's is what you do in the future. First, you don't ask the other coach for permission to put your 6's in. He doesn't run your team. He doesn't make the decisions. That question's not even on the table. So throw it out. Second, you do not put "just about every one" of your 6's out on kick off. You just guaranteed a run back and them only one play by doing so - or did you think those 6's were going to stop their best return man in the open field? I do it this way. The studs cover the kick and nail it deep on their side for no return. The starters are also out for the next play on defense, but while they're running it, on the sideline we're now grabbing kids and telling them "go in for #55 and tell him to come off." So I'm sending the subs in two at a time and my DC (who likes to preserve shutouts) is sending them in one at a time. They get to stay out until they commit a penalty. It takes about 3 plays to get them all out there. So now they're all playing. And - Yes - the offense may get some 5-8 yard runs, but not many. There are three reasons for this. The subs are flat out DYING for a chance to make a tackle, so they play with motivation. Second, they're fresh and ready to go. Third, the other team's tired and demoralized. Fresh and motivated offsets tired and demoralized. My subs have never given up a TD. Film shows almost every single one of them makes a tackle or helps on a tackle. I'd have walked away from the same game you played with a final score of 22-6 (not 22-12) and all those MPP's would have been out there contributing to the win and having fun. True, my starters "piss and moan" all over the sideline because they're not out there, but I wouldn't have gotten a single parental complaint afterwards. The last time I got a parent complaint was 8 years ago when I yanked a DT out of a game who had jumped offsides SEVEN times in a game. His dad followed me off the field and chewed on me for 10 minutes after the game. That proves you can't please all the parents all of the time, but you can please most of the parents most of the time. Bottom line is, you were ahead 22-6 in the 4th, had the chance to play your subs, and didn't take it. Not trying to piss you off. Just trying to make it so that it doesn't happen again.
