New Mexico s Def

I was lucky enough to meet Osia Lewis the def coord of New Mexico and here him talk about his def. They are an undersized unit so he blitzes like crazy and it looks like this:

After many attemtps It still doesnt look quite right. Imagine, three upront, two ends and a nose tackle. 4 yyrds deep will, mike and sam.
Then two others a wolf lines up 5 yrds deep outside the will and a thunder again 5 yards deep inside the sam. A safety in the middle and two corners 10 yards deep.

E is for end though he can line up inside the te, the nose slides left or right and crosses the face of the center and penetrates to the qb, the M is the mike, w is the will, sam of course strong backer. The two B's are extra backers the inside backer is thunder, the outside backer is wolf. His calls for blitzes usually mean at least 6 guys coming. The will and the sam stunt with the ends depending upon down and distance. Mike blitz is called blast and works with the nose. In some cases his calls have certain players going right over the top of an olineman and some calls shoot gaps. He said it preaches aggressiveness and you can have a very very weak player at safety. Your corners must be very very good and the wolf and thunder must be your best def players. There is more to it but in youth football depending upon down and distance seems like you could really get after somebody. Any thoughts??

The "true backers" are 4 yards off the ball the wolf and thunder are 5 yards with wolf outside the will and thunder inside the sam.

corners line up 10 yards off the los. In effect you get 3 levels of attackers but 6 at a minimum coming off the ball. We are gonna go with it for a qtr on Saturday. My kids like it, very unconventional and speaks to speed and quickness not size.

No matter where the receivers go your corners line up opposite them. Any slot receivers become the wolf or the free saftey responsibility. The ends must compliment each other - if one side goes inside the other must flow vertical. The wolf gets vertical then looks if he blitzes. Thunder blitzes inside or moves forward and the sam blitzes outside. My notes are pretty extensive and now I have probably gone too far in trying to explain my point. Draw it up would love to see the comments for youth football.
