DC - Wing T questions

By: Dum Coach
Add to Mixx!

The DC Wing T is a FB oriented offense. It says right in the manual that if your FB averages 4 yards per carry, you will lose. He needs to gain 5 and that means the defense watches him. What is happening is the defense isn't watching your FB. They're watching your HB because they consider him to be the biggest threat. As you stated:

"We have a big strong fast kid at HB..." and "We have an average to below average FB."

Given these observations, any opposing coach is going to key the HB, which is going to create problems for "36 Buck Sweep". What have you done to improve your FB? I may have another suggestion.

As for your problems on "toss", you state, your HB "likes to dance as opposed to taking it strong into the hole."

Here's a test you can do for that. Take a tackling dummy (XXX) and lay it on the ground outside your TE as shown:

B1 B2

O O O 0 O O OX
O X O
O O X
X

Now run 36 Toss against a scout "D" but block it as follows: Let WB motion block B2 at a 45 degree angle (so that the bag does not get in the motioning WB's way) and TE blocks B1. Watch and see if your HB doesn't try and take the play OUTSIDE the bag. You gotta admit this would be pretty bad if he did, right? But I had a HB do this on me this year. If you have this same HB problem, you can solve it by removing the bag, stand in the backfield behind (and just outside) the TE with a handshield, and knock him down if he tries to take the play outside. He'll complain that there's "no hole" (plugged with blockers) but you can just tell him to "hit it anyway." Make him run it three or four times and see what happens.

This test will also point out any blocking problems you have on the "toss". If he gets tackled, find out who got him and how. Once you have the blocking right (Make sure the TE helps the RT), the HB should start cranking out long runs. You can keep this blocking method if you want.

PS: If you think standing there with the handshield will give away the play to the scout "D", call "33 Quick", "47 Speed", and "23" while still standing there with the shield. Oh! Yeah! And if you weigh 300 pounds and that's a 7 year old HB, let another kid bang him with the shield.

How does the HB do on "33 Quick"?
